Description

Mackenzie Phillips shares “a raw glimpse” (Entertainment Weekly) into her lifelong battle with personal demons and near-fatal addictions—and reveals the shattering truth behind her complex, secretive, and damaging history with her father, the legendary John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas.

Not long before her fiftieth birthday, Mackenzie Phillips made headlines with her arrest for drug possession at Los Angeles International Airport; the actor-musician-mother had been on her way to a reunion of One Day at a Time, the hugely popular ’70s sitcom on which she once starred as the lovable rebel Julie Cooper.

Born into rock-and-roll royalty, flying in Learjets to the Virgin Islands at five, making pot brownies with Donovan at eleven, Mackenzie grew up in an all-access kingdom of hippie freedom and heroin cool. As a rising Hollywood star herself, she joined the nonstop party in the hedonistic pleasure dome of her father’s making, and a rapt TV audience watched as Julie Cooper wasted away before their eyes. By the time Mackenzie discovered how deep and dark her father’s trip was going, it was too late.

As an adult, she has paid dearly for a lifetime of excess, working tirelessly to reconcile her wonderful, terrible past and the pull of her magnetic father. By sharing her journey toward redemption and peace, the star who turned up High on Arrival has finally come back down to earth—to stay.

If she was as high or strung out as she was how could she remember dialogue so vividly? And circumstances? I applaud her honesty but it was so repetitious with descriptions of being high I lost track.

I was recommended this book by a podcast I follow, juicy scoop if you're interested, and Man did in NOT disappoint!! Grew up listening to The Mamas and the Papas with my parents so I was already a little intrigued. Great and humbling read.

My morbid sense of curiosity made me read this book. It was interesting as far as historical facts for the timeline of MP's life (I am the same age). A little weird, but drug addiction isn't exactly normal then, is it? A negative comment I have is that in the acknowledgments, MP does not mention Rosie, Nancy, Patty or Dini. Is there some reason for that? I can't believe they were left out as Rosie was MP's caregiver for such a very long time. And Nancy and Patty were a big part of the 'story'. And Dini is MP's Grandmother for God's sake. A 'shame on you' is required.

This book is definitely a page turner. I read it in 1 day. The way that Mackenzie can stay positive through everything she has lived through is truly inspiring... This book is shocking in its revelations, and one can't help but be completely heart broken for Mack. I'm glad she got her life together in the end and I hope she never relapses again.

Never really followed any of the people in this book actors or musically, although I know who they are. What inspired me to read this I will never know but it was wonderful. Im not any of the things in this book, but I was compelled to relate to the sheer humanity, the struggle and desire to come clean on all levels. I don't feel like I was a voyer into another celebrity's private self, but walked a way with a respect for struggle and her ability to never stop loving . Lesson learned.
