Description

Jim Gaffigan never imagined he would have his own kids.

Though he grew up in a large Irish-Catholic family, Jim was satisfied with the nomadic, nocturnal life of a standup comedian, and was content to be "that weird uncle who lives in an apartment by himself in New York that everyone in the family speculates about." But all that changed when he married and found out his wife, Jeannie "is someone who gets pregnant looking at babies."

Five kids later, the comedian whose riffs on everything from Hot Pockets to Jesus have scored millions of hits on YouTube, started to tweet about the mistakes and victories of his life as a dad. Those tweets struck such a chord that he soon passed the million followers mark. But it turns out 140 characters are not enough to express all the joys and horrors of life with five kids, so he's now sharing it all in Dad Is Fat.

From new parents to empty nesters to Jim's twenty-something fans, everyone will recognize their own families in these hilarious takes on everything from cousins ("celebrities for little kids") to growing up in a big family ("I always assumed my father had six children so he could have a sufficient lawn crew") to changing diapers in the middle of the night ("like The Hurt Locker but much more dangerous") to bedtime (aka "Negotiating with Terrorists").

Dad is Fat is sharply observed, explosively funny, and a cry for help from a man who has realized he and his wife are outnumbered in their own home.

This is a great, light holiday read, when you are burned out from studying linguistics or neurobiology or whatever -- when your brain needs a vacation and a laugh. A lot of this material will be familiar to fans, especially if you recently binge watched 6 of his comedy specials. That was our New Years Eve. I'm not sure if being or having been a parent is a prerequisite for fully enjoying this book. Maybe being a former child is good enough. If you are considering being a parent, this will help you weighs the pros and cons.

I loved this book. It is funny and insightful. I'm a mom of 2 living in the country in Maine and so many of his thoughts on parenting rang true with me; even though he is raising 5 kids in NYC. Makes me feel good that we are all facing the same challenges and maybe our kids are normal..... Maybe.

Ah, just kidding. Well sort of. Love this guy when I've seen him on TV and have a CD that I listen to his stand up while I'm in the car driving my two boys around all summer. Interesting, funny and loving. Learned quite a bit, like I'm glad I stopped at two boys. No just kidding again. He is interesting and entertaining and love his crazy family life. Thought it was a very good read. Really enjoyed it and would recommend. Gunna pick up a copy for my sister who is also a fan and mom of twins. Think she will really enjoy.

This book hits in the gut, more than I could of imagined. I fell in love with this family. I laughed, cried and surprisingly related. You two seem to really love each other! There's not a lot of that anymore. The way you talk about your wife is amazing! I was very young when I had both of my boys. I made a permanent decision very young, now I no longer can have kids. After only having two I really regret not having more. Family is the most important fun thing in the world! Thank you Gaffigan family for opening your home for us to look into! Can't wait to hear when #6 is on the way.

I am thrilled to read that parenting is still executed with humor, sass, and love. Thank you Jeff Gaffigan.... I couldn't put it down. Great fun summer read.
