John Arbuthnot (baptised 29 April 1667 – 27 February 1735) often known simply as Dr Arbuthnot, was an English physician, satirist and polymath. Best known for his contributions to mathematics, membership Scriblerus Club and fictional character John Bull. Arbuthnot was born in Kincardineshire, on the north-eastern coast of Scotland, son of Rev Alexander Arbuthnot, an Episcopalian priest and Margaret, née Lammie. During his life, he wrote many works that remain popular today.
